'All the central questions of humanity are beyond science.' (science not superior to art)(Column)

Article Abstract:

It has long been assumed that science and literature are incompatible, and this view has now become so ingrained that few people think to challenge it. Science is often seen as antagonistic to the human spirit, but is respected for its clear achievements. It is now time to consider literature and science as complementary, as they once shared a tradition which was bound up with a magical view of the universe.

Article Abstract:

Bill Rammell, Higher Education minister, has singled out weaknesses in the way in which young Muslims are educated about their faith in a report on the teaching of Islam in universities and colleges. The minister has commented that there is reason to believe that in some cases students are 'exposed more than any of us would like to wrong-headed influences under the name of religion'.

Finding humanity in unity

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the differences between two types if Islamic scholarships and their social and educational consequences are discussed. Particular attention is given to the religious and traditional significances attached to the two types of scholarships.
