BA accused of 'old boy' bias over UKPd1m grant

Article Abstract:

The British Academy (BA) has been charged with "old boys' favouritism" following the award of a UKPd1 mil research grant to Clive Gamble of Southampton University, one of the Academy's fellows, and the withholding of a further UKPd1 mil that had originally been available. The announcement that Gamble won the grant under Academy's centenary research project is expected to be officially announced soon, but a research team led by Vinita Damodaran which made the final shortlist of three from nearly 100 applications has sent a letter to the BA's council and president expressing astonishment and disturbance at the award of the grant to an Academy fellow.

Council refusals spur legal threat

Article Abstract:

Joshua Silver, professor of physics at Oxford University, plans to seek a judicial review of a decision by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) not to fund his pioneering work in atomic physics. Silver believes that the EPSRC council lacked the expertise to properly assess his two grant applications and that it wrongly penalised him for being retired when, at 57, he is still research active.
