Scientists fight to stay anonymous under Act

Article Abstract:

Universities in the UK have received a number of "very specific" requests regarding the nature of animal research work they are conducting following the implementation of the new Freedom of Information Act, which came into force in January 2005. The universities are concerned that, unless safeguards are put in place, the details of animal researchers could fall into the hands of animal rights activists who would then target the researchers.

'Steve Jones compared the percentage of Olympic golds we have won (very small) with the percentage of Nobel prizes, which is outstanding'

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the state of scholarship, research and learning at universities in the UK. It is contended that there is a shift taking place in the higher education sector in the UK towards universities being more commercially competitive and being able to exploit research, and as a result of this there is a danger that research into riskier, less obviously exploitable areas could be marginalised or abandoned entirely.
