Beware this benign racism

Article Abstract:

The practice of positive discrimination for ethnic minorities in US universities has not been very successful in increasing the number of ethnic students. Giving ethnic students priority leads to them being considered as less worthy of a place at university whatever their ability. Positive discrimination of some groups of people reinforces racial differences. The implementation of positive discrimination is fraught with problems, such as defining the ethnic group of a mixed race student. The experiences in the US should deter UK universities following a similar policy.

More trouble than it's worth

Article Abstract:

The Dearing report on UK higher education is not the answer to the problems facing the sector, but is actually part of the problem. The main problem with the report is the fact that it does not reflect how research and teaching are actually carried out in colleges and universities. In fact, the report seems ignorant of how universities operate and how lecturers and administrators have dealt with various pressures since the 1970s. The report makes many generalizations and seems unaware of the specialized nature of academic work and the diversity of sub-disciplines.

Making promises that only others can keep

Article Abstract:

The 2000 US political campaign has seen both candidates concur that higher education needs to encourage more students. The eventual winner will do something for education, but probably not what they have promised as they have nor control over Congress.
