Big fall in medical teachers

Article Abstract:

Universities may be forced to reduce the number of medical school places they offer as a result of a decline in the number of academic clinicians, delegates attending the Developing Academic Medicine conference, held by the British Medical Association in London, were told. The latest statistics from the Council of Heads of Medical Schools reveals that the number of UK clinical academic staff fell to 3,113 in 2004, vs 3,549 in 2000, with the number of clinical lecturers falling to 494 in 2004, vs 594 in 2003.

Business PhDs shun academic careers

Article Abstract:

The Associaton of Business Schools (ABS) has warned that UK business schools suffer from a shortage of staff with backgrounds in academic research. only a quarter of MBA and business PhD students move into academic careers and recent Higher Education Statistics Agency figures show that 46 percent of business school staff come from outside the education sector.

Academics suffer more stress than A&E staff

Article Abstract:

Levels of psychological stress among academics exceed those in high-stree jobs such as A&E doctors and nurses, according to a study for the Association of University Teachers (AUT). The study found that 49 percent of academics suffer strees levels which need medical intervention and 62 say they can not cope in their jobs.
