Black woman breaks into higher echelon

Article Abstract:

Ruth Simmons has been appointed President of Smith College in Northampton, MA, the first time a black woman has been appointed to head a top-ranking university or college in the United States. It is also the first time one of the prestigious Seven Sisters colleges has been headed by a black person. Smith College is the largest women's college in the United States with 2,700 undergraduates. Simmons firmly believes women gain more by attending a single-sex college rather than a mixed one. Simmons was raised in the south by sharecropper parents and is one of 12 children.

Article Abstract:

The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) was launched in 1971 as a sister publication to the Times Education Supplement. The newspaper makes a point of covering a broad range of issues, including items about science and the arts, rather than sticking to purely academic topics.
