Bolognese flavoured corruption

Article Abstract:

Italian higher education minister Luigi Berlinguer's much-vaunted reform of the 'concorso' system for allocating university posts has been condemned as a step back in time. Appointments to professorial posts are ostensibly made by competitive state examination, but it is common knowledge that the places have been decided well in advance. Berlinguer's reforms provide for associate and full professorship 'concorsi' to be conducted locally, with the faculty enjoying huge powers of veto. This system, already used for researcher 'concorsi', has traditionally been the most corrupt.

Clan mentality rules in Italian universities

Article Abstract:

Controversial Italian social observer and critic Indro Montanelli describes his country's education system as nothing short of a total disaster. He argues that access to teaching posts in universities is based on recommendations and favours and that entering the system has far more to do with servility than with merit. He points to Italian academics' deep-rooted mafioso-style mentality and unwillingness to tolerate rebels. Montanelli does not believe that education minister Luigi Berlinguer will succeed in his well-intentioned efforts to reform the Italian university system.
