Bright young things only need apply

Article Abstract:

Employers are highly reluctant to recruit graduate students aged over 28 to their graduate entry schemes, particularly those from new universities, according to research. Employers admit to being biased against mature graduates and they claim to feel unsure of the value of the new universities. Some employers deliberately seek recruits only from the traditional universities or may use A-level results as a criterion, discriminating against mature students who undertook access courses as a means of entering higher education.

Farid the fair and faithful

Article Abstract:

South African religious studies lecturer Farid Esack is internationally known as a radical Muslim. His childhood experiences of poverty and oppression in his Cape Town home sowed the seeds for his adult religous views which argue for contemporary interpretations of the 'Qur'an'. Esack first studied and worked in traditional muslim bodies but his dissident activities drew him away. He has always been active against oppression, particularly that of women, and has been appointed to South Africa's Gender Equality Commission.

Issues concerning the potential importance of closed archive papers to historians and researchers are discussed, with focus on the inaccessible documents that scholars would most like to see and their belief that some secret papers may prove unremarkable.
