Britain at risk of botching its ABC

Article Abstract:

The UK government aims to reduce functional illiteracy among adults through its National Literacy Strategy (NLS), which will cost 58 million pounds sterling. The fact that the government is taking action against illiteracy is to be welcomed, but it can be argued that more attention should have been given to research literature and that care should have been taken to run pilot studies first. The NLS mixes phonics, look-and-say, real books and onset-rime in an apparently haphazard way, and it ignores the fact that nothing that contradicts the logic of an alphabet should be taught.

United Kingdom universities are seeking to compete on quality in southeast Asian markets. The British Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has developed links with government agencies and departments in Thailand and Malaysia and is helping with quality assurance, part of wider educational reforms in these two countries.
