Chipping away at the glass ceiling. (women professors fight for recognition)

Article Abstract:

A new book discusses why just 7.3% of professors in the UK are women when they take up half the places on most university degree courses. A league table indicates disparities between universities based on data not previously publicly released. The appointment of Carole Jordan as first female president of the Royal Astronomical Society, and the award of a chair at Oxford and Gillian Morriss-Kay's appointment to an Oxford professorship, is discussed.

No more bed and bored; a switch to home care could save the health service millions of pounds

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service could benefit from developments in home care which could save on hospital admissions. In the US home health amounted to a $9 billion market in 1988, and in Britain 1.4 million people are involved in caring for someone at home. The idea would extend to personal care and mobility. People with specific needs, such as pregnant women and elderly people could benefit from home monitoring.

Too many cures for too many diseases

Article Abstract:

The University of Oxford's Therapeutic Antibody Centre can only test between five to ten newly created antibodies in one year, even though many more could be manufactured to cure thousands of diseases. Each time an antibody is selected for research, the severity and frequency of the disease it is designed to surpress or cure is weighed up by the research team.
