Article Abstract:

Historical archives in UK universities are being withheld from academics who wish to study them particularly as research documents for official biographies. In the UK state records are held for 30 years and information pertaining to individuals is restricted for 75 years. Some observers suggest that archivists make their own rules concerning access to records. Others believe that the universities should be prepared to follow the same rules as those laid down for state records. Some authors are denied access to information despite having sought permission.

The new Greenwich village

Article Abstract:

The University of Greenwich, England, is building new student accommodation. The accommodation will house 650 students and will not be managed by the university for 30 years. The project has been carried out using a Build Operate Own Transfer scheme, with the university guaranteeing occupancy and payment, and the promoter responsible for construction, maintenance and management. Wimpey Construction Investments put forward the proposal seen as most acceptable.

Pockets of good practice

Article Abstract:

Former polytechnics, renamed new universities, in the UK tend to receive less funding for research than do traditional universities. New universities have taken part in the Research Assessment Exercise, but some of the work that they do is not taken into account by the RAE. The national interest may not be the same as notions of academic excellence, and applied research is important for the UK. There should also be collaboration between institutions.
