Co-ops now pay dividends

Article Abstract:

Universities in the Northeast of England are collaborating on projects in order to obtain an international profile. Joint ventures offer a number of advantages, such as lowering research costs and removing competition. Universities are interdependent on their locality, but vice chancellors of some universities, such as Leeds Metropolitan University, believe regionality should not automatically lead to collaboration as other universities could prove better partners. National funding councils should not focus on regional funding while promoting regional co-operation, say some vice chancellors.

Bid to boycott the hard sell

Article Abstract:

University marketing heads are calling for the establishment of a regulatory body to verify the claims made by publishers of reference dictionaries and check sales statistics. Universities are anxious to be listed in as many reference dictionaries as possible because of the intense pressure to recruit students but many publishers charge for entries or put pressure on universities to place accompanying advertisements. University of North London head of marketing John Callen hopes to establish a regulatory body through the Higher Education External Relations Assn.
