Confident of a better future

Article Abstract:

Biotechnology has made an important contribution to healthcare while providing opportunities for wealth creation and employment, but the future of the biotechnology industry is dependant on building public trust. Around half the people questioned for a 1996 European Commission survey were optimistic about the impact of biotechnology. However public enthusiasm about the medical applications of biotechnology was accompanied by caution about genetically engineered foodstuffs and the use of animals for organ transplants. The survey revealed that people want their opinions taken into account.
