Croydon demonstrates commitment

Article Abstract:

There are 480 further education (FE) and sixth-form colleges in Britain, and the government wants them to attract 25% more students in the next three years. The colleges are reviewing their quality assurance methods in readiness for other changes. A college company operating within Croydon College has obtained the British Standard 5750 for quality assurance. Croydon hope to use the standard in other parts of the college to check that quality standards are maintained.

Disharmony over music assessment

Article Abstract:

The Higher Education Funding Council for England has been accused of performing a routine inspection at the Royal Holloway College without using the correct procedures. The music department's request for an immediate reinspection has so far been ignored by the council, and since a year has passed since the complaint was lodged, a follow-up inspection is now considered extremely unlikely. The council is considering the complaints and will then act accordingly.

Value-added gold standard

Article Abstract:

Further education colleges in the UK have high student failure and early leaving rates, according to an Audit Commission report one-third do not leave with a qualification. This may be linked in some cases to low levels of literacy and numeracy. In some areas as many as 70% of students need help with these skills, and other research shows that pass rates improve if this help is available.
