DFE second thoughts on teaching

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government will publish a Green Paper, or consultative report, on teacher training by autumn 1993, a move which indicates that the government is taking a more conciliatory approach to education. The Green Paper will tackle a wide range of issues from training to funding. A proposal to allow non-graduates to teach after a year's training will still go ahead, despite opposition, but is to be presented in a different format, with prospective students to be those from professions using skills related to teaching. Funding issues include payment for teacher placements which has been a controversial issue, with schools demanding high fees.

NUS shows funding preferences

Article Abstract:

Two student funding options linked to repaying loans for fees and maintenance based on earnings in later life receive the most favourable comments in a National Union of Students review, 'Funding Our Future.' The review assesses 10 potential student funding options against the objectives of improving access to education, alleviating hardship, enhancing education quality, funding part-time and full-time study equitably, and bridging inequalities between further and higher education. Praise is also given to options involving a voucher system, a graduate tax and an employer levy respectively.

Schools of thought diverge in approach

Article Abstract:

Many UK universities are devising plans to establish graduate schools, but there is currently no unified approach. Some universities are setting up schemes which apply to the whole university, while others are establishing schools on the basis of individual faculties or departments. However, all aim to boost the quality of graduate education.
