Digging for victory

Article Abstract:

Fossil-hunter Donald Johanson reveals that he originally studied chemistry at university but switched to anthropology because it was a field which still offered room for discovery. Johanson still enthuses about his discovery of Lucy in Hadar, Ethiopia, in 1974. He points out that the partial skeleton which, at the time was the oldest evidence of human upright walking, captured the public imagination as well as leading the way for the field. Johanson explains that he is now more interested in finding out more about the evolutionary record than in making a big discovery.

Mr Fix-it to put work first

Article Abstract:

A university education should be available to everyone who wishes to take up this opportunity, according to Sir Ron Dearing, who has been appointed by the UK government to undertake an inquiry into the structure and funding of higher education. He is widely regarded as being an ideal choice for this task, as he is likely to inspire confidence among people who hold many different views. He emphasises the vocational aspect of higher education, and states that subdegree courses may begin to play a growing role in universities.

A dip in the ratings spells disaster

Article Abstract:

Student evaluation of the quality of teaching they receive is now common in the US. It is used in conjunction with other measures such as outside evaluation and service to assess whether a teacher is suitable for promotion or tenure. The results of these evaluations are not made public but are disseminated to the rest of the faculty to show the average level.
