Don't shoot the gallery

Article Abstract:

University museums and art galleries are easy targets for cost-cutters, but they are as much a part of a university as laboratories and libraries. University museums and art galleries are not simply places of display and viewing, but places of learning whose contribution to research and teaching should not be underestimated. University art galleries also provide one of the rare spaces where a university and the local community intersect, while their core collections are often based on material transferred from municipal or private ownership in the 19th century.

Red, white and blue

Article Abstract:

The Tate Gallery's acquisition of the former Bankside power station in London, England, has provided a unique opportunity to recreate a national collection, but defining 'British art' is problematical. British art, a term which did not emerge until around 1800, should be recognised as being produced from English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish art within the context of a wider Europe. The paradox that British art can only be recognised through the diversity of a European context should be placed conspicuously on display in the new Tate Gallery.

Blood red, white and blue

Article Abstract:

A memorial is planned in Germany for Holocaust victims, and the debate on what displays should be shown has been characterized by honesty and morality. The memorial could be temporary in order to prolong this debate. The British should consider their history, including total war, which has involved attacks on civilians, as well as slavery and imperialism. The British have been slow in recognising guilt over past history, and there is a need for recognition that Britain has taken more than it has given.
