EU-Israel pact fails to silence dissent

Article Abstract:

Academics should take individual action in order to frustrate the renewal of Israel's membership of the Sixth Framework Programme (SFP), which, with a value of Euro16 bil, is the biggest research programme in the European Union, according to Mona Baker, an academic who caused a storm of protest when she fired two Israeli scholars from the boards of her journals. Baker called for the individual action following the confirmation from the European Commission that it had renewed its agreement on scientific and technological cooperation with Israel, which is expected to contribute Euro192 mil to the SFP.

Lazy days? No such thing for a man with a sporting mission

Article Abstract:

Michael Caine, a 31-year-old academic and co-founder of spin-off company Progressive Sports Technologies (PST) at Loughborough University, uses the long break that academics get over the summer period to focus on PST. Caine believes that 50% of the work done by PST gets done during the 10-12 weeks of the summer. During normal term time, any problems that come up from his company have to wait until the evening, as his days are filled with the usual chores that an academic faces.
