Essential parts

Article Abstract:

The introduction of greater curricula breadth by many of the new universities following the Robbins Report in 1963 marked the first step towards modularity which nearly 90% of Britain's universities have embraced to a greater or lesser extent in 1995. Modular courses generally consist of a specified number of units or modules of learning which a student must complete in order to gain a specified qualification. The introduction of modular or unitised courses necessitates considerable adjustments on the part of institutions and academics, but modularity has undoubtedly become a permanent feature.

French with tears

Article Abstract:

In the 50's French studies had a high degree of coherence, based on the premise that understanding the essence of Frenchness meant studying the evolution of the French language and the best of French literature, tying this in with the definition of culture. Since then the meaning of culture has split into cultural studies and area studies, embracing politics, economics, film and media and many more topics. This diversification is making decisions very difficult for those in the education system, who are having to cope with a huge increase in demand and a severe teacher shortage.
