Evolution of Dan

Article Abstract:

Philosopher Daniel Dennett, director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University, MA, accuses the US's most renowned evolutionary thinker, Stephen Jay Gould, of hindering the advance of evolutionary theory. Dennett claims that Gould, professor of geology at Harvard University's Museum of Comparative Zoology, linguist Noam Chomsky and others misunderstand or distort the theory of Darwinian evolution. Dennett believes that evolutionary theory should be taken into account in every area of human endeavour, but argues that the meme is sometimes preferable to the gene as the unit of selection.

Free range thinking

Article Abstract:

John Webster heads the veterinary science department at the University of Bristil, England, and he argues that animal welfare is more important than animal rights. He argues that humans have power over animals and they do not suffer from being killed prematurely since they do know think about the prospect. They should, however, be spared pain and broiler chickens are reared in ways which cause distress to the bird, so he avoids eating them.

The fascination of fear. (Risk)

Article Abstract:

Risk is a many faceted subject, with insurers seeking precises descriptions of the risk of certain events, and sociologists asking simple questions such as why plane crashes are feared more than car accidents, when death is more likely to occur in the latter. Individuals have different perceptions and reactions to the same risk, with perceptions varying according to the type of society in which an individual lives.
