Fearless in the face of assault on RAE summit

Article Abstract:

Chris Jenks, in his role as pro vice-chancellor for research at Brunel University, is responsible for implementing the university's mission to turn itself into a research-led institution. In his job he has faced strikes by staff over proposed job cuts and scathing attacks from unions. He contends that "teaching should not be seen as a threat or an alternative to research", and that he is "utterly opposed to research and teaching being seen as anything other than a dialectical relationship".

Privatise Oxford? It's 'not on my horizon'

Article Abstract:

John Hood, new vice-chancellor of Oxford University, refutes claims made by Michael Beloff, president of Trinity College, Oxford, that the university plans to move towards privatisation in an attempt to escape increasing state intervention in its affairs. Hood states that such plans are 'not on my horizon', noting that the university already faces enough challenges at the moment without having to deal with the problems that privatisation would throw up.
