Firms feel graduate pinch

Article Abstract:

Twenty percent of 300 major companies survyed failed to recruit their target number of graduates in 1994 despite the 13% increase in the graduate pool. Recruiters complained of inadequate standards of graduate quality. The shortfall was particularly noticeable among engineering and science firms, with 10.6% failing to meet their target, while accountancy companies were the only ones to report a small improvement in graduate recruitment compared with 1993. Eighty six percent of recruiters expect to increase their graduate vacancies during 1995-1998 by an average of 10.7%.

Plans for 30,000 new places

Article Abstract:

The UK Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals forecasts an expansion of colleges and universities in the UK creating an additional 30,000 new student places by 2000. There could be an additional 11 new regional universities and a national university, though not all new institutions would start out as independent universities. The Committee argues that universities help promote regional economic development and that universities should thus be located throughout the UK.
