Singular man of sceptical faith

Article Abstract:

International historian, Alan Sked, leads the UK Independence party, as well as teaching at the London School of Economics (LSE). The Independence party, which has UK-wide coverage, is campaigning for withdrawal from the European Union. Sked studied at Oxford and the LSE, where he was appointed a lecturer. Sked's controversial anti-European Union remarks led to his removal as a lecturer for European studies in favour of history of the United States of America.

Playing major league

Article Abstract:

League tables of the 1,300 higher education institutions in the US were first issued in the 1980's. Colleges are given ratings according to a variety of criteria including student satisfaction and level of funding. Canada also produces league tables, both countries divide institutions into categories to compare like with like. In the US rankings are also offered in doctoral programmes listed according to subject.

Key to Clinton's first 100 days

Article Abstract:

President-elect Clinton has 100 days to decide his new administration before his inauguration on Jan 20 1993. Although the Democrats form the majority in Congress they may not vote through all his legislature. The Republicans are still strong enough in numbers to defeat his plans. President Clinton is planning to alter student loans is likely to be strongly opposed.
