First reactions from stakeholders

Article Abstract:

A number of key higher education sector representatives give their opinion on Sir Ron Dearing's report for higher education funding. Chairman of the Standing Conference of Principals Martin Gaskell is pleased with the report's far-reaching proposals. The report is right to expect the Quality Assurance Agency to introduce, monitor and maintain standards of quality, says Gaskell. President of the National Union of Students Douglas Trainer objects to Dearing's suggestion that students should pay tuition fees. Industry and commerce should pay extra costs, says Trainer. Other opinions are given.

Cutting the red tape to catch the tigers of the east

Article Abstract:

Sir Ron Dearing's committee on the future of higher education does not appear to have appreciated that the vibrancy and effectiveness of the higher education system of Britain's major competitors in North America and East Asia is the result of the diversity of institutions in those countries. Britain has state-funded universities, subject to national regulatory regimes, whereas the dynamic economies of East Asia are dismantling the state system of higher education and encouraging competition. The Dearing report ignores the possibility of allowing Britain's universities to diversify.
