Franchises in standards row

Article Abstract:

The British Council has warned that the global academic reputation of universities in the United Kingdom is under threat following am analysis by the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) which found weaknesses in quality control at nearly one-third of the overseas operations of British universities. The THES looked at all audit reports produced by the Quality Assurance Agency on the franchised overseas operation of British universities which have been published since 2000 and discovered that, in 37 reports, significant problems were found at 11 universities.

Caught in vicious cycle of declining standards

Article Abstract:

A survey of academics working at universities in the United Kingdom has revealed that they believe university standards are falling as universities are being forced to try and maintain student numbers in order to avoid funding cuts. It is argued that a system that ties funding to student numbers will inherently encourage universities to accept students who either will not or are incapable of benefiting from university study and will discourage universities from failing students who are not meeting certain standards.
