Fur flies over merger

Article Abstract:

Members of the governing body of the Medical Research Council (MRC) have threatened to resign if politicians attack plans to merge the MRC's UKPd30 million National Institute for Medical Research with either King's College London or University College London. The House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee held an inquiry on 01 December 2004 into whether such a move, which would be designed to create a major new "transnational" medical research centre, should go ahead.

Oxford lab not sole target

Article Abstract:

Researchers outside Oxford are being advised by national anti-terrorism police on how to handle attacks by animal-rights extremists and are even alerting schools to keep their children safe from abduction. Media attention has been focused on the new animal lab at Oxford University but biomedical researchers outside Oxford are also facing intimidation.

Police anger at 'handbag war'

Article Abstract:

A public debate between Anthony Glees, politics professor at Brunel University, and Alasdair Smith, vice-chancellor of Sussex University, over extremism on campus became personal and a senior police officer at the even accused the men of carrying on a 'war of handbags'.
