Hard-up Oxford college axes history

Article Abstract:

Oxford University's college for mature students, Harris Manchester, is to drop history as a result of serious financial difficulties. The decision has been greeted with anger by the university's history faculty and students, with one senior member of the modern history faculty branding the decision a "disaster and a disgrace". Harris, one of the newest and poorest of Oxford's colleges, has seen the amount of money it receives through the college contribution scheme - through which the poorer colleges are subsidised by the wealthier ones - fall substantially. This year Harris has been allocated UKPd30,000 through the scheme, in 2001-2002 it was allocated UKPd300,000.
