Get connected - welcome to The grid

Article Abstract:

The next incarnation of the world-wide web, known as the grid, is examined in an attempt to show how the increased data processing powers it will offer will benefit academic research. Examples of research that already benefit from the grid are a massive nuclear collision experiment that is being constructed at Cern, the European particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, and the UKPd3.7 mil AstroGrid project to create a virtual observatory for astronomers in the UK.

'The ice pack may shut the door in our face'

Article Abstract:

Scientists are using autonomous robotic submarines to explore beneath the Arctic Ocean basin. Due to the depth of the basin and the Arctic conditions, exploring the basin is only possible through the use of these robots and the missions, which involve millions of dollars of investment, are risky as it is possible that the robots could encounter technical problems and be lost beneath the ice.
