Go-ahead for a jobs revolution

Article Abstract:

Plans for the biggest shake-up of careers in the academic sector for 40 years have moved closer with the decision by members of lecturers' union Natfhe to accept the plans contained within the Framework Agreement for the Modernisation of Pay Structures, and the decision by the Association of University Teachers to call off industrial action and ballot members with a recommendation that they accept the proposals. The reforms will clear the path for a single new pay spine before 2006 that will encompass all university staff, from professors to porters, in new and old universities.

UK menu, local dish

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the decision made by Imperial College London to abandon national pay bargaining and decide locally what it will pay its staff. It is argued that by opting out of national pay bargaining, Imperial is not really striking a blow for freedom and independence, rather it is freeloading and is in danger of destroying a system that is supported by the majority of staff and employers.
