Here's looking at EU

Article Abstract:

There are arguments for and against the European Union becoming a federal institution. Whilst the German Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, advocates a federal Europe, there are those in the UK who still believe strongly in national sovereignty and democratic accountableness. Another argument in the UK, in favour of federalism, is that it would be a retrograde step to dismantle what has happened so far, though there needs to be an adjustment to the policies on European integration.

The panacea in a poisoned chalice

Article Abstract:

When the UK joined the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in late 1990 there were considerable doubts raised as to the wisdom of this move. Many forecast that the outcome would bring unemployment among those previously in profitable and viable export areas. This has proved to be the case, especially hitting the south east. Real interest rates, that is interest rates after taking inflation into account, have risen since entry, not fallen as the Chancellor had promised.

Notes from a small island making a big decision: Three academics explain how and why they will vote

Article Abstract:

'Partisan loyalty' is given as a reason for voting Conservative in the 1997 general election in the UK, by a professor at Warwick University. It is suggested that the Conservative party has enjoyed success in the UK due to the inadequacy of its rivals, rather than its own merits. A Liberal Democrat supporter is voting on grounds of continued debate on social inequality and injustice.
