'It is time to get out from under the government. For too long it has called the tune without any intention of paying the piper'

Article Abstract:

Universities UK needs to grow itself a backbone and stand up to Charles Clarke over the issue of funding for higher education. It is argued that the government of the United Kingdom has become counterproductively more intrusive in the field of higher education, while also becoming steadily less willing to fund the changes it demands, therefore it is time for the people and organisations that are responsible for the operation of the higher education sector to attempt to reduce the level of influence that the government has and to force it to put its money where its mouth is.

'What stops us working the same magic as California? The usual vanity that stops us learning from others and a lack of energy needed for radical change'

Article Abstract:

An examination of the higher education system in California and the way in which it seems to have solved the problems of diversity of mission and openness of access that have been troubling the higher education system in the United Kingdom. It is argued that the UK could learn from the Californian system, and that the only thing stopping us from following the lead of California is a combination of vanity in not wanting to learn from others, and a lack of the institutional energy that would be required for radical change.

'Imagine the ruckus of UK institutions ranked 21 and below were handed "state university" status, while 20 and up were treated as flagships'

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the contention that California offers a blueprint for a public education system, but it is probably too late for the United Kingdom to copy it are examined. It is argued that the public education system in California is the best in the world, but that it would take more nerve and stamina than any UK government is likely to have, even one with an education secretary like Charles Clarke who has a reputation as a "bruiser", to introduce such a system in the UK.
