Excellence is an island

Article Abstract:

India's higher education sector has grown rapidly since Indian independence in 1947, but there is a growing debate over the quality and fairness of higher education and access to it. There are now 229 university-level institutions in India and over 8,000 colleges. There are almost six million students in higher education, but this still accounts for under 7% of Indian people aged 18-23. Access to higher education must be improved, especially for under-privileged groups including handicapped people, women and the scheduled castes and tribes.

Learn in the community

Article Abstract:

Liverpool University and Liverpool Hope University College have developed a programme of community-based learning that benefits both students and voluntary organisations. Students undertake projects for voluntary organisations that have research needs, producing one report for the client organisation and another for their academic department. The projects are negotiated to meet the research needs of the voluntary organisations which are asked to pay only expenses. Students undertake projects as an alternative to the final-year dissertation.

In defence of Cambridge excellence

Article Abstract:

Cambridge University is discussing the possibility of introducing an education studies tripos, which would involve student study at the teacher training college, Homerton. Many academics think that a Batchelor of Arts degree should not be awarded to students who are studying from a teacher training college, even though the college has remarkedly high standards. An alternative is the proposed development of the Masters of Education, which currently exists at the University.
