Lessons of the heart: at-risk students find a human touch in applied English course

Article Abstract:

An English program for at-risk students in Boise High School, IN, is based on Applied Communication, a prepared curriculum designed by the Agency for Instructional Technology. Now known as English in the Workplace, the program was initiated to offer students the chance to experience and express empathy, sharing, understanding and concern for others. The flexibility of the program and nontraditional activities that can be integrated into it have allowed students to interact with senior citizens and disabled students. Through such interactions, students have gained confidence and insight that help them cope with their education, families and jobs.

The future of work

Article Abstract:

Educators need to understand the changing face of the workplace to help students become globally competitive. Work opportunities for students and unskilled adults have decreased while those for technically skilled individuals have increased. Focused action by the educators and businesses about public education will enhance classroom teaching. The students can take charge of their careers if they understand the importance of long-term learning. The development of flexible attitudes will make them skillful in horizontal decision-making, and in the use of technology.

Women's work no more

Article Abstract:

Vocational education administrators are recognizing the urgent need to promote highly technological courses which were traditionally assigned to men, among women. Such discrimination limits the earning power and economic opportunities of women. Now, most vocational programs are geared towards encouraging women to participate in nontraditional courses. Teachers, too, are being trained so as to avoid discrimination and encourage women to achieve their highest potential.
