Letter of law crushes hope for letters after name

Article Abstract:

Many international post-graduate students are about to be sent back to their country of origin because the British government is restricting their visa applications for extra time to write up PhD results. In many cases, three years is not long enough to complete a PhD, and 60% of students take up to four years. The Home Office has denied that the visa laws have been tightened, although the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals claim that this is not the case.

Hope in Pandora's box

Article Abstract:

France plans to test nuclear weapons in the Pacific, officially in order to provide data for simulation. There is a danger of nuclear proliferation with the end of the Soviet Union, and plutonium and enriched uranium becoming available on the black market. Jacques Chirac, France's president, fosters the efforts of other powers to continue developing nuclear weapons, and is encouraging their proliferation by his decision to carry out nuclear tests.

Hope in the darkest hour

Article Abstract:

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) was quickly identified as the cause of AIDS. Research is proceeding to find a vaccine. Meanwhile drugs such as AZT have been successful in treating some patients. The HIV virus does vary with the African strain being different from the European or US varieties. Viruses are normally combatted by using weak strains as a vaccine but this is too risky for HIV. Scientists hope a vaccine will be available by 2000.
