Making education attractive to all

Article Abstract:

The University of Sunderland will receive financial rewards for its achievements in attracting students from disadvantaged backgrounds. A central programme is operated to recruit students in a region of high unemployment and underachievement, with aspirations raised and education made attractive. Nearly 50% of its 15,000 students are over 25-years-old and around 50% are locals. The majority of students also work, with many courses allowing for flexible part-time or full-time commitment. Many courses are offered to initially attract people back into education, such as 'Computing for Grandparents.'
