Article Abstract:

Lisa Jardine, professor of English at Queen Mary and Westfield College in London, England, discusses food and cooking. She recalls dinner parties from her childhood with guests such as Aldous Huxley or Yehudi Menuhin and recounts connections with food she has noted in her historical writings: the Byzantine emperor John VIII eating salad in Italy where it was considered peasant food, the many recipes included in Francis Bacon's writings. In studying Tudor cookery with her daughter she discovered that blancmange was originally a chicken dish.

Jolly good fellows set to reform; the British Academy is old, male and elitist say its critics

Article Abstract:

The British Academy was set up in 1902 to focus on subjects such as history, politics and archaeology. In 1991 the Academy became the body which gave out grants to research students wishing to take further study in its subjects. The Academy is working on various ways of reforming its operations, including increasing the number of female and younger fellows. Freeing university staff to undertake annual research trips is another suggestion.

Getting a leg up on the clothes horse; the recession has cut deeply into jobs for fashion students

Article Abstract:

British colleges training fashion and fashion-related students are noting that many of their graduates are not being employed. Of 1991 graduates surveyed, only 64% of them found employment in the industry, 8% went on to higher education. It is felt that courses are training too many students, and government policy is to increase the numbers. Many fashion graduates go abroad to work, some find employment through course placements.
