NVQs suffer a skills blow

Article Abstract:

A 1996 study by researchers from Sussex University has highlighted flaws in the UK National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) system. It found that 38% of assessors and 48% of external verifiers admitted to passing students whose work did not meet the required standard. In addition, the report reveals that the assessment system necessitates too much paperwork and that the funding does not reflect the different amounts of training required for different subjects. The National Council for Vocational Qualifications which administers NVQs says the report endorses changes which are already being planned.

Charlie's angel

Article Abstract:

Richard Hodges, new head of Prince Charles' troubled Institute of Architecture, explains that the institute's previous governing council did not appreciate what it was getting into when it decided to enter the world of academia and validation. Hodges, professor of visual arts at the University of East Anglia and one of Britain's leading archaeologists, points out that he is the first senior academic to become involved in the institute. He is confident that the institute will regain Royal Institute of British Architects validation for its course.
