New title holders face tough decisions

Article Abstract:

Canterbury Christ University, Chester University, Southampton Solent University, Liverpool Hope University, Winchester University and University College Northampton have all won the right to call themselves universities. All of the universities now face the decision of whether they will develop research activities, which will enable them to gain the research degree-awarding powers required to award PhDs, or to continue as teaching-only universities along the lines of US liberal arts institutions.

Support is lacking for minority students

Article Abstract:

Universities in the UK are failing to provide ethnic minority students with adequate support in their academic studies and in their hunt for graduate employment, according to research led by the Institute for Education for the Department for Education and Skills. The research found that even when factors, such as background, which are known to affect class of degree were taken into consideration, students from an ethnic minority background on average performed worse than white students.

Disabled staff gain new champion in workplace

Article Abstract:

The Commission of Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning, launched May 2007, will conduct a comprehensive survey of the number of disabled staff in English and Welsh higher education and the challenges they face.
