Newspeak loses its voice

Article Abstract:

The Russian press, once only reporting stories with a political message, has taken on the worst aspects of Western media values. Newspapers now feature gossip columns, society pages and sensationalist reports, plus extracts from Western best-sellers. On Russian newsstands, Marxist newspapers now compete with a plethora of socialist and nationalist publications. However, Russia's volatile political situation means that its flirtation with Western press standards may not be permanent.

A voice for culture

Article Abstract:

David Mellor was appointed as Minister for Heritage in June 1992. His new department will oversee bradcasting, the arts, film, museums and sport. One of his major projects will be to oversee the introduction of a national lottery. At present the arts are individually run by bodies such as the Arts Council and the BBC. Sponsorship and market forces are now recognised as methods of fund raising for the arts and sport.

Article Abstract:

National identities are formed in three stages according to some observers. Stage one is the formation of groups and dwellings into bigger areas and forming links between them. Stage two involves the evolution of a culture and often involves military adventures. Stage three sees the society develop and settle into different sections of society. Finally social, administrative and political systems are formed.
