N8 rivals gaining on Golden Triangle
Article Abstract:
Northern universities are becoming confident that they can catch up with institutions in the Golden Triangle in their domination of research income. Figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency show that in 2004-05 Cambridge and Oxford universities continued to lead but that key universities in the North were moving up the table, with Manchester University now in fifth place.

Biocentre unites all in seeking key to life
Article Abstract:
The UKPd36 mil Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre, which will be the UK's largest interdisciplinary research centre when it is finished, is expected to be completed in 2006 following eight years of planning and negotiation. The centre will unite chemists, computing experts, physicists, engineers and mathematicians in the quest to unravel the meaning of life.
