Article Abstract:

Jonathan Clark is an historian who graduated from Cambridge University, England, and initially worked as a stockbroker before returning to the academic world. He later studied under J.H. Plumb, but felt neglected and found another supervisor. His work has since been critical of Plumb. He published English Society which led to a fellowship in 1986. He emphasized the old order in this work, and later criticised the historical establishment and became a media figure. He works at Kansas University where he has a professorship in British history.

Children of Major reveal litigious side

Article Abstract:

UK graduate students are increasingly appealing against decisions by examiners. This may be because they have often invested their own funds in courses. Appeals systems vary across UK universities though there has been a move to standardise this. Students can complain if they feel their supervision is not adequate, though initially they may not have enough knowledge to judge how adequate their supervision is. The Higher Education Quality Council is studying this issue.

Alf, the cinder fella. Debate over a biograph of the life of King Alfred, includes related articles giving conflicting views on the authenticity of the book

Article Abstract:

The Life of Alfred the Great, biography of an Anglo-Saxon king, written by Alfred Smyth, a medieval history professor at Kent University, has received a mixed reaction. Smyth contends that the Life of Alfred supposedly written by Asser, King Alfred's tutor, is a forgery, and that the biography was written much in the 11th century by Byrhfert a monk of Ramsey Abbey. The claims by Smyth have enraged many Anglo-Saxon experts, and lost Smyth many friends.
