'Too secret ... too late' (United Kingdom, investigation into the bovine spongiform encephalopathy crisis) (includes related articles on the role of scientists in the crisis and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease)

Article Abstract:

A doctor's warning of the possibility of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) affecting humans, published in 1988, was not supported by the experts in the food industry. Others who also warned of the dangers of the disease were not believed by civil servants and scientists, in the UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF). Professor of Zoology Sir Richard Southwood found his investigations, during the 1980s, were dismissed as being alarmist. Some experts observers found MAFF were unwilling to use their advice in the formation and implementation of policies on BSE.
