Article Abstract:

Universities in the UK are becoming increasingly aware of security issues as campuses have been specifically designed to be accessible and open. On-campus security should focus on access routes, the precinct, buildings, a security presence and publicity. Security should be manageable and economic and the environment in which criminals can operate should be minimized. Theft is a major criminal activity at universities, with rape and assaults far less common. Consistently good visibility is important, and the police should be consulted to give advice on crime prevention measures.

To fit out or fit in

Article Abstract:

Space is often used inefficiently at UK universities. The is a need to manage space better, and the University of Leeds started to do this in the 1970s. Space has a value in the business world, and universities need to apply business techniques. Carrells are used in libraries and are booked in advance to allow the same space to be used by different people. A space weighting exercise is being carried out in the UK and the results are to be assessed by the funding body.

Catering without sauce

Article Abstract:

College catering in the UK has tended to involve poor quality food. The student refectory used to be untidy, and there was little variry of food, with overseas student offered curry, and vegetarians offered eggs and cheese. This has since changed, with modern universities dressing catering staff in uniforms, but the food has not improved greatly in quality and resembles food found in UK service stations. The sense of fun of old-style refectories has also disappeared.
