Of uncertain tomorrows

Article Abstract:

Academic and Author Edward Said was criticised in the press by some observers who suggested he did not have the right to speak for the Palestinians because his links with Palestine have been magnified. In the past Said has written a number of books on the plight of the Palestinians. Said has been suffering from leukaemia since 1990. His latest book recalls his childhood in the Middle East and later as a student at Princeton University in the US, during the 1950s. The book 'Out of Place' was published in Sept 1999.

Academia, go f**k yourself

Article Abstract:

American Playwright and Author David Mamet sees the teaching of English literature as useless as he suggests it only serves to stop children enjoying books. He accuses universities of being a type of child care service to keep children out of employment. He is known to be a controversial figure and difficult to interview. Mamet's views on further education were featured in his 1992 play' Olenna.' His latest book, 'Wilson: A Consideration of Sources' also criticises academic life.

Academia as Roman holiday

Article Abstract:

Italian universities do not operate in the ways which would normally be expected of universities in other countries. There are around 100 students for every member of staff, and this makes it impossible to encourage students to operate creatively. Staff have very few teaching hours, and there is almost nothing approaching the concept of the supervision or tutorial. There is a very high drop-out rate, with only around 30% of students completing their course.
