On holiday with Dionysius

Article Abstract:

Classicist and Author James Davidson is very excited about his move to Birbeck College, London, in the autumn of 1999, as he feels the classics are becoming much more popular. His second book 'One Mykonos' was not written from the academic point of view. It is a more personal book including a wide variety of material from the modern world and the past. Davidson's first book was praised by classicists and the public. The book 'Courtesans and Fishcakes: The Consuming Passions of Classical Athens' looked at how people in classical Athens enjoyed making love, eating food and drinking.

The increased popularity of the course indicates that the European Community is receiving growing attention from American businesses. Desmond Dinan, Director of the Centre of European Studies, says there is more interest in foreign affairs as American entrepreneurs realise the need to compete abroad. The success of this course could be a sign of change in American attitudes.
