Over the limit?

Article Abstract:

Sociologist Martin Plant feels that disputes about the use of research grants will inevitably arise. Most of these disputes are easily resolved by the parties involved. However, he has left his position as director of Edinburgh University's alcohol and health research group following allegations of research irregularities and the misuse of research funds. He does not believe that he is responsible for repaying outstanding grant money. He intends to pursue his research through an independent agency.

Classic dilemma for English

Article Abstract:

Controversy has been aroused in British university literature departments about the concentration on dead male writers such as Shakespeare and Milton. A survey reveals that feminist, black or militant writers are being studied at the expense of the former classics. The favoured writers in some institutions are now Alice Walker, Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka. Some students dislike the emphasis placed on sexuality in the teaching of literature, as do academics.

A knock at the men's room door; the gender studies boom

Article Abstract:

Some writers feel there is now a place for 'men's studies' to give a balance to the increase in feminist and gay studies. They would cover topics such as unemployment, violence and the military and heterosexuality. Others argue that this would dilute funding available for women's studies, and that most academic study is concerned with men. One solution may be to have 'gender studies' covering women's, gay and male studies.
