Article Abstract:

Choi Po King a lecturer in Hong Kong sees the reunification with China merely as a change in colonial rulers which will still be as restrictive as in the time of the British. B.J. Duggen suggests that the judiciary may be in difficulties following the handover of Hong Kong. Lecturer in politics Elfed Roberts feels that political change will be slow and the economy will continue to thrive. Professor of law Nihal Jayawickrama suggests that China will remove some political rights and increase police powers. Reader in social work Petula Ho is very unhappy that the future is so unpredictable.

The mental bloc about going east

Article Abstract:

British PhD students remain reluctant to study in Central or Eastern Europe in spite of the opportunities offered under the European Union's Tempus programme. The Tempus (trans-European co-operation scheme for higher education) scheme is part of EU efforts to develop the higher education system in Central and Eastern Europe. Tempus includes the Tacis and Phare programmes. The lack of enthusiasm amongst British students is attributed to a misplaced belief that Eastern and Central Europe are academically inferior, and to concerns about language problems.

Milk of human delusions

Article Abstract:

A study, co-authored by Max Birchwood, professor of psychology at Birmingham Univeristy, found that cognitive therapy helped schizophrenics to recover more quickly from acute psychosis than those receiving traditional treatment regimes. Cognitive therapy aims to take a patient's psychotic experiences at face value, discussing them and breaking them down into more manageable parts. It was found that old symptoms were not replaced by new ones, although there may be some treatment-resistant symptoms.
