Article Abstract:

Norman Porter, the son of a late Ulster Unionist hardliner, had hoped that his controversial book attacking the Protestant approach to peace in Northern Ireland would stimulate more people into considering how Unionism can define itself differently. However he acknowledges that 'Rethinking Unionism' appears to have gone down like a lead balloon. Porter, who returned to Northern Ireland in 1995 after almost 20 years as a politics lecturer in Australia, argues that the Ulster Unionist Party should accept the Anglo Irish Agreement in the context of a decent, devolved government.
