Pick 'n' mix sweetens pill for part-timers; Northern Ireland's two universities are 'going modular' with their degree courses

Article Abstract:

Ulster University and Queen's University in Northern Ireland are introducing modular degrees in 1992. Northern Ireland meets the government target of one in three young people going into higher education, many of them studying part-time. The modular system which divides the academic year in two, and allows degrees to be taken in two years is particularly suited to part-timers. Students accumulate credits and can move between departments.
