President caught up in gangster family ties

Article Abstract:

An examination of the investigation into William Bulger, president of the University of Massachusetts, and whether or not he is covering up for his brother, James Bulger, the head of the Winter Hill Gang, an Irish-American crime syndicate, and the second most wanted man in America after Osama Bin Laden. James Bulger has been a fugitive from justice since 1995 when he was tipped off that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was going to arrest him on racketeering charges. A congressional hearing into the FBI's mishandling of the James Bulger case has dragged his brother into the investigation, with the chief inquisitor, Indiana Republican congressman Dan Burton, accusing William Bulger of suffering from "convenient memory loss" as far as contact with his brother is concerned and seeking an investigation into possible charges of perjury.

Grey days can be heydays

Article Abstract:

The number of academics at US universities who are aged over 70 has been rising steadily since the mandatory retirement age was abolished 10 years ago. Many do not step down because they believe they have a few good years still left in them and they believe that they have much to offer both to students and to other, younger faculty members.
